National Perennial Month - Asclepias Tuberosa

Kicking off National Perennial Month with Asclepias Tuberosa - Butterfly Weed, the 2017 Perennial Plant of the Year!  This striking perennial is native to the Continental United States (except for certain areas) and has vibrant orange/red/yellow flowers which attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Best grown in well-drained soils with full sun, these will grow to approximately 2-3' tall and are drought tolerant. Also great for long-lasting cut flowers! Fun fact - These have a medicinal history dating back to the colonial times when used for treating pleurisy, a common ailment causing wheezing, coughing and pain due to inflammation around the lungs. The success from treating with Butterfly Weed caused it to gain another common name - pleurisy root.
